On this day in 1917, anti-labor vigilantes forcibly gather & ship over 1,200 striking members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) in cattle cars from Jerome & Bisbee, Arizona, into the Sonoran desert; where they are guarded by the US military. Wobbly James Brew is killed in the deportation.  The vigilantes & their supporters justified the deportation as a legitimate act of a community protecting itself from traitors, spies, & anarchists who were determined to undermine the war effort.
